Hearn, who was at UTEP for 34 years, joined the Miners as an Assistant Athletic Trainer in 1988 and was promoted to Head Athletic Trainer in 1995. At the time, she was only the third female to serve as Head Athletic Trainer at an FBS school, and the second to oversee football. She was elevated to Director of Sports Medicine in 2019.
'She is so deserving to have this award in her name, which will benefit many student athletic trainers for years to come.' 'Dawn Hearn has been a staple of UTEP Athletics for many years and has made an outstanding impact on so many UTEP students,' Keith said. Keith is a 1977 graduate from The University of Texas at El Paso and was a student-athletic trainer. The award will also allow for the Sport's Medicine student-athletic trainer to grow from its current amount of 15 students to the ideal total of 25 students. The funds will be used to provide support for student-athletic trainers including, but not limited to, tuition support, book expenses, transportation and assistance with room and board. It's being funded by donor Austin Keith in honor of Hearn.
